FLOURISH #2 | Care & Love

Plant the seed, Flourish together.
English version below.

Care & Love

FLOURISH #2 | Care & Love

Caring for Yourself and Others  |  Plant the seed, Flourish together.

Sometimes, life's greatest lessons don't come from textbooks, but from listening to someone's real-life story.

The second FLOURISH workshop, held on October 18, 2026, at Sathira-Dhammasthan, Bangkok, became a deeply moving and meaningful learning experience.

Our volunteer facilitator, Thanisara Kaew-in, invited a very special guest, Jameel Haiat, an American artist and former Principal Production Designer at Walt Disney Imagineering, with over 25 years of experience creating world-class projects, including design work for Disney’s Star Wars universe. Jameel and his family traveled from Chiang Mai to share his life journey with ISV youth.

He took us back to his childhood, sharing the challenges he faced growing up, how he overcame obstacles, and the determination that led him to a remarkable creative career. After experiencing life in different places, he chose to settle in Thailand because it truly felt like home. Chiang Mai became the place where he wanted to live.

But his story was about much more than professional success. Jameel openly shared his experience of living with advanced-stage cancer, the changes in his body, and the reality that he can no longer eat normally.

Throughout his talk, he frequently needed to spit out saliva because of his condition. He lifted his shirt to show the young people the feeding tube in his abdomen, explaining that this was now “like his mouth.” Although he could no longer eat through his mouth, the feeding tube was helping keep him alive.

He spoke about these realities with openness, allowing the young people to witness both the vulnerability and resilience of human life. Through these changes, Jameel continues learning to live with understanding and acceptance, supported by his wife and their little dog, Tom Yum.

More than 70 young people listened attentively for over an hour, asking thoughtful questions with genuine curiosity. We also deeply appreciate China (Natpapat Shanmartkit), just 14 years old, who volunteered as an interpreter, helping everyone understand Jameel’s stories and responses.

The atmosphere felt like one big family home, where a beloved uncle was sitting among his nieces and nephews, telling them stories. Except these weren’t fairy tales. They were real stories from a real life.

Something especially meaningful happened. For the first time, Jameel was able to speak for more than 20 minutes. Yet, surrounded by attentive young listeners, he continued sharing and answering questions for well over an hour. He thanked the young people for giving him this special opportunity. Their genuine interest and many questions touched him deeply.

This was not simply an occasion when young people received something valuable from Jameel. Jameel, too, received something precious from them.

After his sharing, Thanisara invited the youth to reflect on what they had heard and consider how we can care for the person right in front of us, whoever that person may be. Caring can begin with truly seeing someone, listening without judgment, and trying to understand what they may be experiencing.

Thanisara then guided the youth through different forms of moving meditation, helping them reconnect with their bodies, emotions, and inner awareness through movement and direct experience.

Care & Love is not only about loving ourselves when everything is going well. It is also about learning to live with change, treating ourselves with kindness through difficult moments, and developing a heart ready to care for others.

Our heartfelt appreciation to our volunteer facilitator, Thanisara Kaew-in, for creating such a meaningful space for learning and reflection.

Our deepest thanks to Jameel Haiat, his wife, and their family for making the journey from Chiang Mai and sharing such a personal life story.

Special appreciation to China (Natpapat Shanmartkit) for volunteering as an interpreter and bridging languages, generations, and hearts.

FLOURISH is more than a learning program. It is a way of growing together. Plant the seed, Flourish together.
